Handmade Playdough in KB

In Kitah Bet we love to play with playdough. We shaped so many things from birthday cakes to birds nestS, challah, headbands, ABC letters and lots more.
We thought it would be fun to make our own playdough. Morah found a recipe and it turned out GREAT!
Our handmade playdough feels different from store bought playdough. It is softer and doesn't dry out as fast.

Here's the recipe:

2 cups plain flour (all purpose)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adding in increments until it feels just right)
food coloring (optional)

Method:

Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl
Add the boiling water
Stir continuously until it becomes a sticky, combined dough
Add the food colouring and glycerine (both optional)
Allow it to cool down then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously for a couple of minutes until all of the stickiness has gone. * This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s the perfect consistency!*
(If it remains a little sticky then add a touch more flour until just right)
Voila!

KA: Shabbat Party

Each Friday in Kitah Alef we celebrate Shabbat with a  party. The children and the morahs dance and sing Shabbat songs. We want to impress upon the children, even at this age how joyous is the Shabbat. The children's eyes light up in delight when the morahs announce that its time for the party! They run to the chairs at the tables in anticipation of whats to come. When the morahs began to sing the songs, the children all join in. After the children have joined hands and sing, they get their cup of  grape juice. After the blessings have been said, everyone drinks up!
Our favorite song to sing is:

The shabbos angels are peeking through my windows Ema's lighting candles and Aba is going to shul
(Sing Twice)
Shabbat shalom...to every one of you

Shabbos is coming we're so happy we're going to sing and shout out loud! Six days a week we wait for shabbos a gift from Hashem and
were so proud!
Let's sing together, shabbos!
Whisper together, shabbos
Let's shout together, shabbos !!
Tell it to the world Shabbos!

Morah Mushky leads the class in Shabbat songs and fingerplays.

The children love to join in on the songs and finger plays.

Our Tree KG

Our class now has our own  tree.  We imagined this tree together and then created it out of our thoughts.  Our tree and it's environs invites us (the children) to sit beneath it to talk, giggle, lough  and mostly to make our friendships stronger!

Fire Safety at IJP

The local firemen came to visit our school  to discuss and demonstrate fire safety. We were divided into 2 groups one saw a puppet show with puppets that sang safety songs like *stop drop and roll*don't play with matches*crawl if there is smoke *smoke detectors and more. Then the firewoman reviewed the songs messages with the children by asking  the children different questions .

The other group sat outside with the Firemen and their truck.  We saw a fireman getting dressed up in his firefighter uniform. He looked kind of frightening to some of us, but he told us not to be afraid. Then they showed us different equipment they have on the truck. They also explained to us about the fire-engine and carefully with a big smile we climbed up on it and got to see it from inside.  We really had fun!

KA-Our Classroom

The children in Kitah Alef explore their classroom each day. They come into the class and go right into their tray and table activities. It's so rewarding as a Morah to see their growth since the beginning of the year. The children take many new adventures each day right here in our room. Their daily adventures include dressing up in various costumes, cooking in our kitchen area, using our classroom laptop to practice their typing :-), and cells phones to call all of their families and friends. At this age it's important that the classroom is a comfortable and functional environment for the children.

Snow at IJP

The children in KB were able to see the snow when it first began to fall. The snow inspired our art for that day. We did snow painting! We used black paper and white finger paint to create our very own winter wonderland. The morahs also used this as a time to discuss winter and snow. While the snow fell we talked about how it was falling from the sky and that it was cold and we would need our mittens and gloves to touch it! The smiles on their faces and the excitement in their voices was a clear indication that the children were certainly happy to see the show!

Science experiment with melting ice in KG

Kitah Gimmel experimented with melting ice, what makes it melt? And how does ice melt the quickest? Here are some of their hypothesis before experimentation;

Cassidy: we can put something in our hands and then the ice will melt in it
Eli: we put it in hot food for a second
Kemp: put it in the refrigerator.
Laylah: put it on a plate.
Josie: you put it in a cereal bowl.
Mina:put the ice on the floor.
Amitai: you take a heater and then the ice melt.
Ziva: you put it in the snow.
Libi: you put it in a cup with water.
Bryna: hold it.
Adaya: put it in water and then wait for a long time.
Perly: you put it in a big cup.

Then we put colored ice in: Hot water,Cold water, Salt and Baby oil
the children sat and waited to see the result... the ice in the hot water melted first, then in the cold water, then in salt and then baby oil.  How interesting and fun.

Penguins in KDH

What book are the children looking at and listening to with such interest? Anartica

KDH welcomed penguins into the classroom this morning. Four little penguins made their home in our tray filled with "snow." A fuzzy penguin joined the children in the block area. Luba and Motty made them a home. The wind up penguin begged to be named. Theo's suggestion, Mr. Waddle, was chosen.
Mia told the class that penguins live in Anartica. Max added that it is very cold there. In the summertime it is as cold there as is in Atlanta during the winter.

We waddled across the classroom like penguins and stood in our rookery balancing an egg on our feet.

So why did we bring penguins into our classroom? We thought they would be at home in our cold winter weather. And, we love them too!

A Show by Kitah Bet

Freeda & Tirza did a play on the stage outside about animals. The story was about a giraffe and a panda bear. They played in the snow and then they went in a car to Africa.
In Africa they saw many more animals, like penguins ("penguinos"), mommy, daddy & baby monkeys, hippopotamus ("hippomapatamus") and elephants.
Then they did another play about 2 lions, a baby lion and a girl lion playing together..
