Outdoor Action

KDH along with the other children enjoyed the warm weather outdoors. The improvements added to the yard this past Sunday at Yard Day are enjoyed by all!.

KDH actors and actresses did their acts on stage.

KDH planted the pansies in the front of the school as well as in the new flower bed box.

It felt like summer. We would have loved to go swimming, we did have the foam noodles. The children set up a game of limbo and  also played telephone with them.

Did you know that the foam noodle amplifies your voice. The vibrations from your voice can also be felt on the outside of the noodles as you speak.

Thank you KDH families for all you have added to our yard and making KDH a fun and exciting place!

Opposites

"Yaakov and Eisav,
Twins but Opposites.."
a chant composed by our own Morah Sara Carter. The children chant along as we listen to the CD. Besides for helping us remember the Parsha/Torah Portion it supports language development. At circle time the children were challenged to list as many opposites as possible.
Alex: dark - light
Theo: shiny - rusty
Nadav: up - down
Motty: girl - boy
Jonah: growing - dying
Sholom: night - day
Dovi: hot - cold
Menny: tight - loose
Eden: here - there
Mia: clean - dirty
Max: big - small
Felix: empty - full
Luba: open - closed.
This is an impressive list. We added a few more as the class played an opposite card game together that Morah Estie lent to us.
above- below
sad - happy
in  front - behind
outside - inside

We also have a self correcting matching puzzle game of opposites that the children use during center time.
These "opposites" are nouns, adjectives, verbs and directional and positional words. Knowing these improves both our receptive and expressive language.
As you can see from the opposites that the KDH children shared they have lots of language to use!

Playball Fun!

The children in Kitah Bet enjoyed Play Ball today. They ran, jumped and laughed! Play Ball gives the children the opportunity to enhance their gross motor skills and to following direction  as well.  The children jump through hoops, toss bean bags around, blow bubbles and more!

Freeda, Tirza, and Jules are getting warmed up with the coach.

The children were so eager to catch the bubbles!

The children in Kitah Bet listen eagerly to coach's instructions.

Tirza, hopped as a bunny through the hoops.

Catching the hoops is one of their favorite activities in Play Ball.

Florie blows the bubbles.

Spilt Milk Art in Kitah Bet

A book we are reading in our classroom is called, "It Looked Like Spilt Milk". While reading the book we try to guess what each shape looks like.
Our art project today was inspired by this book and in keeping with our discovering of light and dark, we used light white paint on dark black paper.

Using droppers, we squeezed paint onto paper.

Then we folded our papers,

and opened them,

 LOOK what we made:
"flowers and little flowers" by Rikki

"goldfish" by Tirza

"a kitty cat" by Freeda

   "a wing" by Reyn

A peek into a part of the process:

KG Seed Collection

Between the pumpkins, gourds, tangerines, apples from Rosh Hashana and more, we have developed an interest in "the pit's" or more scientifically  Seeds of the fruit or vegetable.  We have begun by collecting seeds that we find in our lunches or at home and then we are classifying them in bags with their seed names on the wall.  We are also busy experimenting with which grown and in which environment they will grow.  What does a seed need to grow?

KG We are Making our own discoveries!

In Kitah Gimmel we have discussed color mixing and blending when looking at the fall colored leaves.  So far we discussed yellow and red making orange.  This week Morah put out yellow and blue at the easel and sure enough some of the yeladim mixed them together to create a new color all on their own.  This kind of self discovery is very exciting!

Amitai- "Look Morah it makes green!"

Adaya- "I made a green"

We are all learning and exploring so much while making our new discoveries.

Extended Day- Sidewalk Chalk Fun

Extended Day gives the children the opportunity to do all sorts of fun and interactive activities that truly extend their learning of the morning time. Many of the children picked up the chalk and were "scritch scratching" all over the pavement. They were actually writing their names or pre- writing their names. None of the lines and swirls are for naught. Ultimately these writings turned into numbers too when Morah Mushky drew a whole hopscotch game on the ground. Now we learned a new game that includes taking turns, counting, hopping and of course balancing on one foot. All in a (great extended-days) work!

Sensory Bottle Fun

During the preschool years children use their senses to explore the world around them. In Kitah Alef and Bet we  created "sensory bottles". In some of the bottles we used vegetable oil and in the others corn syrup. We call the bottles that were created with the vegetable oil the "fast bottles" and the ones with corn syrup, the "slow bottles". Each day the bottles began on the window sil but throughout the day they are explored and moved to many all the areas and centers in the classroom.

Ruth, picked the sensory bottle and her bear and began shaking it. Her eyes lit in amazement as the objects in the bottle moved around.

Pearl, collected three of the bottles, and looked at each of them separately. She looked and smiled as she picked up each bottle one by one to explore the contents of each.

Florie, stood in front of the window and first picked up the red bottle to shake it, and then the green bottle. Which one moves slow and which fast?

Lewis, turned the chair around at the table so that we could get a better view of the sensory bottles. He pick them up, and turned them upside down to watch the items move slowly around the bottles.

Morah Mushky, demonstrated to Henia how this sensory bottle worked. They both enjoyed playing with the bottle.

Hannah, stared intensely at the bottles. After she looked at the red bottle to placed it on the table to get a better look at the green bottle.

During lunchitme, while the Morah was reading, Tirza asked if she could sit with the bottles and look at them while she ate lunch. The Morahs were happy to oblige. Even after lunch was finished, she continued to play with the bottles.

Light & Dark in Kitah Bet

We are beginning to explore the very first story in the Torah. The 6 days of creation!
This story provides us with a wealth of subject matter from which to engage and excite young learners.
This week we began our discovery of light and dark. Day one of creation.

Playing at the light table

Looking through a window block, Jayme notices "everything is yellow"

Rikki is painting with black paint on white paper, and Reyn is painting with white paint on black paper.

 Tracing our shadows

Drawing faces on our shadows

Here Freeda is trying to step back into her shadow

 Flashlights

 LED lights

Glowsticks

The box is dark, is there something inside?
Lewis holds a flashlight to the little opening on the side and the light shines in.

SURPRISE!
It's a lizard.
