Music to Our Ears: KDH goes to the Symphony

KDH Trip to Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
Tuesday morning, March 3rd, KDH came in with much excitement! Finally, the day of our field trip to the Symphony had arrived! We all came ready, with various ideas and hypotheses of what instruments we may see and hear. Everyone wore an IJP t-shirt, so we can all stay safe and stick together. We were ready!
We played a fun, movement game called “Toega”, similar to Yoga before we left!

We all got buckled, safe and ready to go!

We are on our way!

We all gathered in the lobby. Once everyone had arrived, we were shown to our seats in the Symphony. While we watched and waited so patiently for the hall to fill up, and the musicians to take their places, we observed them practicing before the show officially began. How cool!

Finally, the Symphony began! We saw and heard violinists, pianists, and so many new instruments we had never seen or heard before.

KDH visits the Delta Museum

Thank you to Mr. Katz for creating a wonderful field trip to the Delta Museum incorporating our interest in maps. The children started the trip by receiving a map of the museum and then used the map to navigate through the museum for the entire trip. We learned about how pilots fly and move a plane. We even got to take turns moving a plane! Mr. Katz explained to us the travel maps airlines use to get to their destinations. The children looked at different airplane maps. We used different color Lego to symbolize the passengers going to different cities. Each child was a city and found all of their passengers by working together to sort the different color Legos Some cities the children said they were are Los Angles California, Charlotte North Carolina, Miami Florida, Orlando Florida, Barcelona Spain. The children observed Delta model airplanes and helped put together a seating map for a Delta airplane while they were sitting on it.  We ate snack under the Boeing 747 and even looked at a globe while we were there.

We’re all buckled, safe and ready for an exciting day! It’s so fun to ride with our friends!

ARRIVAL!
Patiently waiting for all our friends to arrive and park.

KDH Haetz Market

Our Tu Bi Shevat discussion began with the children creating trees with sticks and clay, using branches to “plant” trees on the playground, learning about the seven species, and thinking about why we celebrate the tree’s birthday -“they are getting older”, “they are alive” Then thinking about how we can celebrate their birthday - “give them water and sun”. We then thought about what trees and plants give us -“oxygen”, “homes”, “wood”, “woodchips”, “paper”, “food”.

The children’s appetites were whet by the idea that trees give us food. They were already really interested in the pecans from the pecan tree on the playground so our Tu Bi Shevat explorations sprouted from there. The children used nutcrackers to crack pecans for their haetez market for the holiday. After preparing pecans, we listed other fruits we would sell including apricots, figs, and raisins.

The children immediately realized we need money for the market and were excited to make money. They began coloring and cutting American money observing the green colors and rectangle shape. Some children created rainbow money. The children decided the mail center would become the spot to create money. They then put the money in the mailbox to mail to the market. We didn’t stop with American money. The children looked at shekels and money from other countries then cut out and created these currencies. We observed the colors and letters on each currency and marked the coun- tries on our world map to tie in our interest in maps.

The children created their own sign for their haetez market. One child wrote the words “haetez store” on a piece of paper while another child glued it on a larger piece of paper the children decorated together. Children drew an apple tree complete with “a ripe apple and this apple is not ripe it is brown and me holding an apple” sunflowers, the sun, rain cloud, flowers, “me looking at the sun and holding a sunflower” and hearts. While the children created the store sign, they discussed the jobs they would have “I am going to pass out the money” Once the market was ready, KDH took turns shopping, scooping, bagging, and running the register for each other. The market was so successful that we invited Kitah Bet and Kitah Gimmel to shop. Once child from Kitah Bet asked it shop again when he came to school the following day. Great customer service KDH!

Pecans are not the only seed we explored. The children dissected lima beans and examined the little plants inside observing “the bean looks like a bald eagle in there” “it’s like an egg hatching” “the seed coat protects it so the inside doesn’t get dirty.” The children looked at magnetic pictures of the life cycle of a lima bean and put them in order. After seeing these pictures, the children naturally brought them over to our bean sensory tray to compare and to our sprouts as they planted. They children planted lima beans in wet cotton balls and observed them. One child said “the pom poms are to keep the seed clean.” When the beans sprouted, they observed the sprouts and roots and planted them in cups of soil. Excited by their plants many children made signs asking how to spell lima bean and sounding it out. This began our letter l and letter b week. After planting our lima beans, the children noticed plants sprouting in the woodchips on the playground. “What’s that?” Asked one child which lead to a discussion between the children. Once they decided it was a plant sprouting from a pecan on the ground in the recent rain, a child said “so throwing seeds on the ground is not littering. It is planting.” The very next day there was a lot of rain, lightening, thunder and wind. When we got back on the playground the following day the children discovered many big and small branches that has fallen in the stormy weather. The children immediately decided the branches looked like trees and picked up their shovels. “We are planting trees for Tu Bi Shevat!” they declared as they worked together to plant in the sand and the woodchips. They discovered planting involves many jobs … “someone needs to hold the tree” “I will dig the hole” “I am covering the tree with sand” “get water to pour on the tree” Once the children completed planting their trees for Tu Bi Shevat, they decided together how to take care of the trees. “water the trees” “give them sun” and placed cones near them so other people would know to be careful around the trees.

We are all in this together! KDH explores the Power of Unity

Inclusiveness, diversity, and equality are on our minds as Martin Luther King Day approaches. Kitah Daled Hay started exploring these important concepts by looking at our IJP school community. Who is in this community and how do they help us?  “Mr. Kevin  fixes everything” “he works hard” “he works hard to build” “he is the hardest worker”  "we love Mr. Kevin" Who else helps us at IJP? “Donna works at the front desk” “she reads books to us” “she helps the school” “Morah Ezie plays with us” “she reads books” “she is nice to us”  Once we started thinking about our school community, the children couldn’t stop. “What about Morah Elie?” “she helps us” “and Morah Dena” “they take care of the school” “they are really well at their job” “they are in charge” “ I am going to give them a medal a trophy for being super good at their job”
The class recently received a thank you note from the children in need at Amy’s Holiday Party whom we baked for at Hanukkah time. They enjoyed the cookie bars we baked and encouraged us to continue to do kindness for others. Kitah Daled Hay wondered what act of kindness we could do for these special people in our IJP community. “bake cookies” “make bracelets and necklaces” “make thank you cards”
The children set out making thank you cards using materials that are special to them: markers, stickers and decorative tape. They carefully selected the stickers. “Hearts for love” “Hanukkah stickers” “Jewish stickers” “number 5 because I am 5” “rainbow” “pink dots ... ok no more pink dots we have a lot” “fruits ... fruits and vegetables keep you healthy” “butterflies” “lots of Magen Davids”  “numbers” "music notes she helps us with music" After one card was complete, the children immediately asked who can we make a card for next? As they created more cards, they created new techniques for decorating. “We are putting the sticker down, tracing the sticker, and taking the sticker off and putting it back when we are done” tracing the stickers evolved into drawing their own hearts, Magen Davids, and more.  As the children made these cards to thank our community members for helping us, they united stronger as a community themselves. While creating, the air filled with “can I have a turn with the blue marker? ... yes I’m almost done ... here” “no more pink dots we have a lot ... ok I am getting a green dot ... ok” “can I use the purple?” The children were communicating effectively, listening and helping each other as they were creating cards thanking people for doing that with them.

When the children delivered their first card to Mr. Kevin, we paused and noticed how he felt. They observed his face and body and felt how their card made him feel. Seeing this made the children eager to deliver more. They brought the cards all around IJP in case they saw the recipients. Their pride in making our IJP community feel good was palpable in the care they took of their cards and the expressions on their faces. Each time they saw a recipient, the children naturally united as a group and rushed over to get the cards to deliver.  As the children got ready to deliver the cards they said “everyone needs to be holding on.” and chanted "we have a delivery" "we have a special delivery" with big smiles from ear to ear. After delivering the cards, the children eagerly explained their contributions to the card and enthusiastically expressed their gratitude and why they made the cards. Adults and children lit up as they connected.

Everyone needs to hold on. We have a delivery!
Each time the children finish a card they immediately want to know “can we make another one?” and we say “yes who should we make a card for now? “ Followed by “why -how do they help us?” The children always answer these questions quickly demonstrating their understanding of everyone's unique role in our community in relationship to them. The children's list continues to grow ... “Morah Adina she helps us with music, sings songs, teaches us music” We can deliver it today when we have music." “Morah Jessica she makes art with us.” “Morah Adi she told us about her trip to South Africa” “Morah Cree she plays with us in aftercare” Each time the children deliver a card, we pause, observe the recipient's body language and pay attention to how the card made the recipient feel. Noticing the smiles and appreciation makes KDH smile too. Our KDH kindness card project will continue to grow as the children continue to identify people in the IJP community who they would like to thank for helping them.

Thank you to everyone in the IJP community for everything you do: helping us, keeping us safe, and teaching us how to unite and work together. ❤️ Kitah Daled Hay
