Can colors and numbers come alive and have feelings?
KDH listened intently to One and Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. In One, Red is mean to the other colors. The children became impassioned as they listened to the story. “Red is mean,” they cried. They were impressed by the story’s climax. One color stood up to Red. Red stopped his hurtful actions. All the colors and numbers included Red and played together.
We began reading Zero, Isaac declared, “There is the color that was mean!” The other children concurred. We knew that One had left an impression... Zero is unhappy because he thinks he does not count. Everyone was pleased with the surprise ending as all the numbers work together creating larger numbers. It was as KDH children often say, “Team work!”
Wow. Colors and numbers working on being kind, sensitive and cooperative.
We can do that too!
