Music and Sound

In Parshat Beshalach we read about the Jewish people’s spontaneous and exuberant singing after
crossing the Red Sea safely. Miriam used a percussion instrument as she sang. KDH marched around singing with instruments. Thank you, Menny for sharing two instruments with the class.

In Parshat Yitro, we receive the Torah at Mt. Sinai after thunder, lightning and the sound of the shofar. Then it was very quiet and Hashem spoke to us.

MUSIC AND SOUND……

KDH is going to an Atlanta Symphony performance on February 13th. How should we prepare ourselves?
What do we want to know? How does sound travel? What are the different families of instruments in an orchestra? How do we make a high sound, a low sound? Some of this has been introduced by Morah Adina through the year. This week Morah Adina played a Find the Instrument Game. The children listened to music from many different instruments.

KDH hummed into kazoos and then made their own. Theo brought in an xylophone and we went up
and down the scale. A dot to dot activity, counting by tens was introduced and the children drew xylophones. How can you make music with rubber bands? Musicians buzz their lips against a metal mouthpiece on their brass instruments. We buzzed with our lips. Nessia declared, “This tickles!”
