KDH City continued....

KDH continued to design and build their city. Trees were added as well as a grocery store. The circus tent was completed with a trapeze swing outside and details were added to all the buildings. And what is a city without all the people.

 Trees

 People and Post Office

The post office evoked lots of interest and activity. The children parked their cars in an indoor garage on the side of the building(box) and wrote letters in envelopes to each other. They used the slot in front of the building and caught the letters in a basket(cup) inside. We are watching to see how that will continue to evolve along with all the vehicles that will be built this morning with the Dads.

Tu B'shvat in Kitah Bet

Yesterday was the 15th of Shvat or Tu B'shvat, the birthday of the trees.
In Kitah Bet we have been celebrating this day by talking about the trees and what we get from trees. By planting and watering seeds and by tasting some of the 7 special fruit of Israel.
We tasted figs and dates at snack time.
We de-seeded a pomegranate and tasted it too.
We ate grapes and  made our very own home made grape juice.

We each got a ziploc bag of grapes and tried to squeeze them by hand, turns out its hard work.
What could we use that could help us squeeze the grapes? we looked around the room. We tried citi blocks, we tried a wooden train track and then we found that real wooden blocks are perfect for pressing down very hard on the bags of grapes. The juice comes out of the grape!
We squeezed and squeezed and then went with the morah to the kitchen, we poured all the pieces of grapes and the juice into a small pot , we took a potato masher and all took turns pressing down and squeezing out as much more juice as we could. Morah Leah cooked it for a few minutes and then we strained it through a strainer, let it cool for a few minutes and strained it again through a cheese cloth.
We let it cool and used it at our Shabbat Party for Kiddush. It was yummy!

Drawing Outdoors

Tomorrow is Tu B'shvat, the New Year for Trees. KDH has been exploring trees all week. We read Be a Friend to Trees, which describes all the wonderful things we get from trees. We have created trees for our city from clay, pipe cleaners, twigs, and more. Today we took soft pastels outside and the children observed the trees and drew them.

The KDH City

KDH children continue to enjoy playing in the block area. They build houses and rockets and race the cars along the streets on the riser and down ramps that they set up. We continue to set up provocations to help them "go deeper" in their exploration. Today we put up pictures of Atlanta's skyline, a post office, fire station and a Publix and the Midtown Trader Joe's. We handed out large pieces of cardboard and some boxes. We asked the children if they would like to draw and create their own city.... They thought about it, took out markers and began......

Jonah is designing a building shaped like a rocket.
Felix made a skyscraper with snowflakes on it.
Alex drew his home and took wire from the art center and attached it. He explained, "This is the electrical wires."
Eden drew a home on a box with windows cut out. She opened the box and drew the people and pets inside. They can be seen when the windows are open.
Menny created a police station and wrote,"police," on it.
Dovi's box is going to be our fire station. Dovi stamped Firehouse on it and put a pole inside for the firemen to slide down.
Theo's masterpiece is the inside of his home. Mia's home is shown with the family. Max also chose to draw his house. Motty drew on both sides of his cardboard and Luba's home has windows too. Sholom is drawing his house.
KDH's city will have entertainment, as Nadav is creating a a circus tent.

We will continue to plan and build our city. It will serve as a backdrop to the project that is planned for Donuts with Dads, this coming Monday.

KG Ballet Show

When we went to the yard for outside time, Amitai asked if we can close the curtains of the stage, Morah said fine; if he was putting on a show. "How about a Ballet show" Amitai exclaimed! All the other yeladim got excited and each took turns showing the ballet moves that they know how to do. They were enjoying the outside stage. Amitai started using some pots to make music, so Adaya reminded him that ballet has soft music and the tin was making to much noise. So they decided to lightly clap on the stage instead of banging the pot. They worked so nice together and worked it out. Not only did the yeladim decide to put on a show on their own but worked out how to make everyone happy at the same time.
