KDH Haetz Market

Our Tu Bi Shevat discussion began with the children creating trees with sticks and clay, using branches to “plant” trees on the playground, learning about the seven species, and thinking about why we celebrate the tree’s birthday -“they are getting older”, “they are alive” Then thinking about how we can celebrate their birthday - “give them water and sun”. We then thought about what trees and plants give us -“oxygen”, “homes”, “wood”, “woodchips”, “paper”, “food”.

The children’s appetites were whet by the idea that trees give us food. They were already really interested in the pecans from the pecan tree on the playground so our Tu Bi Shevat explorations sprouted from there. The children used nutcrackers to crack pecans for their haetez market for the holiday. After preparing pecans, we listed other fruits we would sell including apricots, figs, and raisins.

The children immediately realized we need money for the market and were excited to make money. They began coloring and cutting American money observing the green colors and rectangle shape. Some children created rainbow money. The children decided the mail center would become the spot to create money. They then put the money in the mailbox to mail to the market. We didn’t stop with American money. The children looked at shekels and money from other countries then cut out and created these currencies. We observed the colors and letters on each currency and marked the coun- tries on our world map to tie in our interest in maps.

The children created their own sign for their haetez market. One child wrote the words “haetez store” on a piece of paper while another child glued it on a larger piece of paper the children decorated together. Children drew an apple tree complete with “a ripe apple and this apple is not ripe it is brown and me holding an apple” sunflowers, the sun, rain cloud, flowers, “me looking at the sun and holding a sunflower” and hearts. While the children created the store sign, they discussed the jobs they would have “I am going to pass out the money” Once the market was ready, KDH took turns shopping, scooping, bagging, and running the register for each other. The market was so successful that we invited Kitah Bet and Kitah Gimmel to shop. Once child from Kitah Bet asked it shop again when he came to school the following day. Great customer service KDH!

Pecans are not the only seed we explored. The children dissected lima beans and examined the little plants inside observing “the bean looks like a bald eagle in there” “it’s like an egg hatching” “the seed coat protects it so the inside doesn’t get dirty.” The children looked at magnetic pictures of the life cycle of a lima bean and put them in order. After seeing these pictures, the children naturally brought them over to our bean sensory tray to compare and to our sprouts as they planted. They children planted lima beans in wet cotton balls and observed them. One child said “the pom poms are to keep the seed clean.” When the beans sprouted, they observed the sprouts and roots and planted them in cups of soil. Excited by their plants many children made signs asking how to spell lima bean and sounding it out. This began our letter l and letter b week. After planting our lima beans, the children noticed plants sprouting in the woodchips on the playground. “What’s that?” Asked one child which lead to a discussion between the children. Once they decided it was a plant sprouting from a pecan on the ground in the recent rain, a child said “so throwing seeds on the ground is not littering. It is planting.” The very next day there was a lot of rain, lightening, thunder and wind. When we got back on the playground the following day the children discovered many big and small branches that has fallen in the stormy weather. The children immediately decided the branches looked like trees and picked up their shovels. “We are planting trees for Tu Bi Shevat!” they declared as they worked together to plant in the sand and the woodchips. They discovered planting involves many jobs … “someone needs to hold the tree” “I will dig the hole” “I am covering the tree with sand” “get water to pour on the tree” Once the children completed planting their trees for Tu Bi Shevat, they decided together how to take care of the trees. “water the trees” “give them sun” and placed cones near them so other people would know to be careful around the trees.

Once Upon a Time There Was a Tree.. (KB-5)

In honor of Tu B'Shvat- the birthday of the trees, we decided to start the children off with a sentence starting a story about a tree, and see where it would go and what they would come up with. We did it in two separate groups so there are two stories. Here are our stories: can you tell we've been learning about trees, weather, and animals recently?

Once upon a time there was a tree…

Zoey: “It got broken”
Logan: “They cut it”
Rafi: “Then it fell down”
Maddy: “Then the leaves fell down”
Menny: “The grey clouds went up and it rained on the tree”
Rafi: “And the rain fell on the tree”
Zoey: “And it made a puddle”
Maddy: “We need rainboots and umbrellas”
Rafi: “The rain made the tree grow and it was fixed”
Zoey: “And then it was sunny”
Maddy: “We need sunglasses”
Zoey: “And a hat”
Zoey: “Fruit started growing on the tree”
Sylvia: “Apples, and pears grow on the tree
Maddy: “And oranges”
Menny: “And blueberries”
Rafi: “And nuts”
Logan: “And red apples”

The end

Once upon a time there was a tree…

Emmett: “The leaves were falling down and then the trees had a birthday”
Avraham Chaim: “They had a cake”
Emmett: “It was made out of tree”
Eli Lipskier: “The children were in the tree and they played with the animals”
Eli S: “I have a penguin at my house”
Avraham Chaim: “I have a giant panda”
Avraham Chaim: “The squirrels ate all of the cake, and then they ate squirrel food and went back to the tree.

The end

It's already Fall in KB-5

The start of the school year also signals the start of the season of fall, which was very apparent in our outdoor classroom this week. The children noticed that leaves were falling off the trees, and repeatedly pointed up to the trees saying "Look, the leaves are falling off the trees!"
We discussed how in the spring and summer the trees get very green and full of leaves and flowers, and then in the fall the leaves start to change colors and fall off the trees, which then makes the trees bare in the winter. We also sang the season's song, telling us about all the seasons:

"In winter we see snow
in spring the flowers grow
in summer days are hot and we go swimming
in fall the leaves turn red, gold, and orange, and brown
Hashem makes all the seasons come around.
Winter, spring, summer, and fall
Winter, spring, summer, and fall."

The children also noticed that there were lots of leaves already on the ground all around us, and their imaginations got to work. Some of the children started jumping and stepping on the leaves and listening to the lovely crunching sound it was making.
Others decided to take a pile of leaves and throw the leaves up around them.

The children then decided to collect leaves, and create one big leaf pile! They worked together, each child collecting leaves and adding them to the pile. They then took turns jumping into the leaf pile!

The next day, winter was brought into Kitah Bet as well! While playing in the sandbox, Rafi and Eli L took their strainers and shovels, started to pour out the sand, and said, "Look Morah, it's snowing!"

Fall is just getting started and we're already having so much fun! We can't wait to see what more fun we can have with fall, and how else we can explore, imagine and discover with it.

Extended Day's Geometric Sticks

Sticks have a great potential for learning all types of new skills.  We got to gather sticks, sort them out, clean them up, and add a bit of paint to each end for countless creation opportunities.  While collecting, we targeting the small straight sticks but didn't mind if some were bigger or a bit curvy.

Once we got a basket full, we decided that some were fat and some were skinny, so we sorted them out into groups then cleaned them up a bit by scraping one stick with another.

Then we filled some cups up with paint for dipping.  Some sticks have the same color and some have a different color on each side for more matching options.

Once all of the sticks were dry we got to finally play with them!  Some used sticks with all of the same color, some made specific shapes, and others just had fun matching the colors together.

We even played pick up sticks! Ilan thinks that this pile looks like a campfire.

Spring in Kitah Gimmel

We are back! Kitah gimmel children came on Monday filled with wonderful stories of their Pesach. Sharing their special holiday box, singing ma nishtana, finding the Afikomen and eating lots of matzah.

We celebrated the season of spring this week. We went to say hello to our Figgie tree and  were so pleasantly surprised to see so many leaves, different sizes, growing on him.  When we left for Pesach he only had a few little green sprouts.  How did this happen?  What will happen next?

Our observations:
Meital:  ‘Yeah Figgie!”
Miki:  “So many leaves!  And look a ladybug!”
Reyn:  “He needs a rainbow!”
Jules: “I wonder if the bugs like to land on the leaves”
Jayme: “The leaves are nice”
Dovid “I can make a tree lego!”
Ilan: “So pretty!”
Tirza: “ I like touching it!”
Rikki: “It must be Hashem!”
Freeda: “The butterflies are coming!”
Lewis: “ His brother over there is not growing like Figgie”
Jules “You're growing Figgie!”
Chana: “Figgie is growing!”
Elijah: “Love you Figgie!”

We spent time looking and examining closely our Figgie during the week (despite all the rain) and we are keeping a record of growth too.  The yeladim decided they wanted to ‘redraw’ him since last time we did it was winter and he looks very different now.
“We love you Figgie!” we started singing and sang throughout most of the day.  What a wonderful surprise to see on our first days back !

Tu Bshvat, the Birthday of the Trees in KB

Birthdays and trees are two things the children in Kitah Bet can really relate to. All year we have been celebrating children turning 3.
Trees have birthdays too, and trees, just like us, grow!
Torah compares man to a tree in the field and it was clear from watching the children explore Tu Bshvat that there is a deep connection between the children and trees and nature.

TuBeshvat Higia!

Kitah Alef celebrated the birthday of the trees this week by planting Lima beans. We also played with dirt in our sensory table all week long digging up all kinds of treasures. Morah Myriam held up a camel that we found in the dirt and asked "What animal is this?" Caleb: "Giraffe" Morah Myriam replied, "I think it might be a camel..." Everyone: "Yes, a camel!" Morah Myriam: "Where do camels live?" Caleb: "New York!" :-)

We asked the children "Who likes the trees?" Ezra: "Me, me, me!" Holding up a bag of beans, Morah Mushkie asked: "What is this?" Sammy: "Beans!"Should we plant the beans inside the dirt? Class: "Yes!"

So, in celebration of TuBeshvat we planted beans in a little pot for each child. We dropped the bean in the dirt and added more dirt on top.

Once everyone had placed their bean into their pot we added water.
We placed all of our pots by the window so they would benefit from the sunlight. Every day we add a little water and we wait....

We have been talking about the trees on the playground. We are hugging the trees and giving them lots of love. We can't wait to watch our little beans grow!
