KDH Big Event Art

KDH Self Portraits - Big Event Art
KDH January self portraits were printed.

The children used a pointy object to outline their self portrait onto a foam tray.

When that was done, they chose an ink color and using a brayer roller, spread the ink onto the foam tray.

The next step was pressing the painted foam tray onto a piece of card stock paper.

Finally,  they lifted the foam tray up and admired their beautiful print.

Sincere thanks to David Sinrich for scanning in the children's unique art work and creating this beautiful poster

Self-Portraits Using Loose Parts in KDH

This summer’s theme for camp is “Discovering the World Around Us- where young artists meet budding scientists”. In part of discovering the world, we need to discover OURSELVES! There is a saying in Judaism, “The world was created for ME!” That means that Hashem had each of us in mind when creating the world.

Here in KDH we spent our first week creating self-portraits using a little imagination and a lot of loose parts! Our kids are natural abstract artists and were able to create self-portraits with a ton of emotion and expression.
"I like it because I can make silly faces!" said one student.

 What are loose parts?
Loose parts are everyday materials such as stones, stumps, and boxes that can be adapted and manipulated in many ways.  Using loose parts encourages open-ended learning, creativity and imagination.  This allows children to create in any way they choose, without a specific set of directions and using everyday material.

Throughout the summer, we hope to incorporate loose parts in more of our art and activities as we learn about nature and the world around us.  We look forward to an amazing summer!

I Am Special In Kitah Bet

Welcome to Kitah Bet,

The first few days of school have been wonderful!
They have been all about getting to know each other, connecting, getting comfortable in the classroom environment,  becoming familiar with the classroom routines, learning our Morah's and friend’s names, and most importantly playing, singing and having a great time together.

At IJP the children are viewed as collaborators: they are competent, curious, inquisitive, unique, and creative. To this end, we are starting their school year, and for many of the children their school career, with an exploration of the concept of self, with an All About Me unit.

Drawing Self-portraits  is a great way for children of all ages to explore the concept of self. It is something they will do on a monthly basis in Kitahs Gimmel & Daled. We decided to try our hands at it this week in Kitah Bet. There are many skills being acquired as your child creates their self-portrait. They are developing basic math skills such as shape recognition and understanding the part to whole relationship. They are naming facial features and learning color recognition.

Some conversations while drawing self portraits:
Yoni drew his self portrait and as he finished, he got up and went to the sign in board and took off the picture of himself and brought it to me saying "Yoni".

Morah L: "Shaya what color crayon would you like to use to draw your eyes?"
Shaya: "Blue"

Hannah drew on her self portrait and said "hair" then she drew some more and said "nose"

An invitation to draw: The center was set up with a mirror on a stand, paper and crayons.

The children loved looking at themselves in the mirror.

We looked in the mirror identified each part of our face and then we drew

.We noticed that everyone's face is different, well, almost everyone:

These twins have faces that are identical! How cool.

Self Portraits KDH

Look at this month's self portraits.
The photos of the children were placed in plastic sheet protectors.
Using sharpies the children traced an outline of their face, hair, eyes, nose and mouth. Then the photo was taken out of the sheet protector.  A blue piece of paper replaced the photo.

The children are excited and surprised at the amazing work they produce. We are excited but definitely not surprised!!

Pesach and Self Portraits in KDH

Creating connections is a large part of the learning process. In KDH we create connections with each other and create connections from previous experiences to  new ones. One connection is social and the other cognitive in nature. Both support learning and remembering.
We read in the Haggadah, "In every generation, each person should visualize himself, leaving Egypt." Each month the children draw a self portrait. We try to vary the media to give the children as many experiences as possible. Sometimes the materials used relate to what we are working on in other areas. Legumes were used close to the Parsha where Yaakov made lentil soup. Last month we were making city prints. We liked that so much, we made our self portraits with prints.
Last week, as we were preparing ourselves for Pesach and making our KDH haggadah, the children drew a self portrait leaving Egypt together with all our Jewish brethren. They drew the boiling hot sun beating down in the desert, desert sand or water from the Red Sea and finally many of them were holding their matzah as they made their way of out Egypt!
We hope this will raise our consciousness of our connection to generations of the Jewish people.

May Self Portraits

Our final self portrait of the year combines our recycling activities with creating self portraits. How many times do you throw out a puzzle when you lose a piece or two? KDH likes to reduce, reuse and recycle. We took old puzzle pieces and painted them a beige skin color. Then we added hair, eyes, and other details with yarn, googly eyes, felt, and sharpies. What a fun way to recycle and create art at the same time!

Self Portraits

Each month at IJP the children draw self portraits.
It is always interesting and exciting to see the progress the children make in their fine motor skills, drawing and self awareness.
In Kitah Daled-Hey we use different mediums as we try to give the children as many experiences as possible. Usually the children look in the mirror and draw their portraits.

In September the children used Sharpies to draw their portraits. This month as we built on those skills, we did something with a little twist. We did not take out the mirrors. Instead, photographs were put into sheet protectors. The children used black sharpies to draw the outlines and then filled in with color sharpies.

When they were finished, the photograph was removed and replaced with light blue paper as a background to the drawing.  All we can say is, “Wow!”
