Special Guys in KDH

What do we know about the guys who are special to the KDH children?

This is what we found out upon inquiring from the children.
Our guys range in age from 18 to 50.
Challah, chicken and chicken soup are popular foods.  Pizza, bananas, chili, cucumbers and salmon are other favorites. A dad on a diet favors brussel sprouts. Liquor is a favorite drink.
Our guys tell jokes and tickle the children to make them laugh.
At work our guys go to meetings, speak to people, teach classes, work on computers, rent houses, build, talk on the phone and try to get money!
What is it about these guys that the children would like to do when they grow up? Go to work, drive cars, have computers, be a mad scientist, go to shul, have meetings, build, and cook. What was the most heart warming aspiration? I want to have kids like my dad did!
The children love spending time with their dads exercising, coming to school, playing games, reading books, getting surprises, taking out the garbage, going to Catch-Air, riding bikes, and painting together.

Besides for sharing their feelings, the children prepared for the special morning. They used line drawing and pointillism to design ties for the guys. They baked blue berry muffins to serve. Thanks to special guy, Ian Mendelson for sponsoring, purchasing and preparing the wooden cars and wheels for everyone to make a fancy vehicle.

The children wrote a card for Avraham Chaim who was home recuperating and Logan and his dad built a car for him. Kudos for doing the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim.

A fun morning was had by all!

KDH Cookies for Israel

Remember Hurricane Harvey? All the way back at the beginning of this school year, KDH jumped right in to help the Houston victims. We baked challot, sold them, and sent the money with Morah Sara's husband to Houston.

Yesterday KDH was busy with chesed again. This time the children got together and planned how to participate in cookies for Israel. What is cookies for israel? An over 3,000 sq.ft. flag to be made with 100,000 cookies will be put together in Atlanta on June 3rd.
The entire venture has been underwritten and now the 100,000 cookies need to be sponsored. This will raise $1,000,000 and set a Guinness world record.
The money will be given to three charities in Israel.

How could KDH get money to join this fundraiser?? We concluded that
cookies for cookies
would be fantastic! We would bake cookies and sell them. The money that we earn would be used to sponsor cookies.
The children came to the kitchen and gathered together all the supplies: flour, sugar, eggs, oil, baking soda, chocolate chips, vanilla and cookie sheets. Next, it was working together around the table, measuring, cracking eggs and mixing. Finally the cookies were ready for the oven. When they had baked we waited for them to cool and packed them up in cellophane bags tied with a blue ribbon.

Becker made the first sale. Miss Donna bought five cookies from him! Annika was so excited that she used her ingenuity to print some money.

The cookies are all packed up waiting for customers. We are proud of the KDH children who are so kind. Using their fantastic baking skills they began a year and ended it caring for others.

KDH Chesed

The attribute of gratitude is one that we try to foster. We ask the children what they are thankful for. Often the children will tell us, "We are thankful for food." Sara and I reflected on that answer. We realized that our reciting brachot before eating snack and lunch and singing Borei Nifashot and Birkat Hamazon after eating has fostered an appreciation for, as we sing, "the healthy food."
Imagine our excitement when Janine and Maira suggested that we prepare lunches for the Zaban Family Shelter.
We asked the children to bring in food.  Maira and Janine brought the rest of the food and supplies.

The children decorated the bags.

Then spread the peanut butter and jelly onto the bread.

We put in a note.

We packed up the fruit, bars and sandwiches.

This chesed project was quite literally, food for thought. We asked the children to think about their homes, beds and foods. The people at the shelter don't have this. Then, while preparing the sandwich, some of the children wanted to stop and "go play." We talked about how their parents always prepare food and take care of them, even when they are tired or have something else they want to do. This was our time to take responsibility to help others who would not have food without us. The children heartily agreed.

A fantastic activity to do in this Purim season. Thank you to Janine and Maira for initiating, purchasing, packing up and delivering the lunches!
