KDH Chesed

The attribute of gratitude is one that we try to foster. We ask the children what they are thankful for. Often the children will tell us, "We are thankful for food." Sara and I reflected on that answer. We realized that our reciting brachot before eating snack and lunch and singing Borei Nifashot and Birkat Hamazon after eating has fostered an appreciation for, as we sing, "the healthy food."
Imagine our excitement when Janine and Maira suggested that we prepare lunches for the Zaban Family Shelter.
We asked the children to bring in food.  Maira and Janine brought the rest of the food and supplies.

The children decorated the bags.

Then spread the peanut butter and jelly onto the bread.

We put in a note.

We packed up the fruit, bars and sandwiches.

This chesed project was quite literally, food for thought. We asked the children to think about their homes, beds and foods. The people at the shelter don't have this. Then, while preparing the sandwich, some of the children wanted to stop and "go play." We talked about how their parents always prepare food and take care of them, even when they are tired or have something else they want to do. This was our time to take responsibility to help others who would not have food without us. The children heartily agreed.

A fantastic activity to do in this Purim season. Thank you to Janine and Maira for initiating, purchasing, packing up and delivering the lunches!
