KDH visits the Delta Museum

Thank you to Mr. Katz for creating a wonderful field trip to the Delta Museum incorporating our interest in maps. The children started the trip by receiving a map of the museum and then used the map to navigate through the museum for the entire trip. We learned about how pilots fly and move a plane. We even got to take turns moving a plane! Mr. Katz explained to us the travel maps airlines use to get to their destinations. The children looked at different airplane maps. We used different color Lego to symbolize the passengers going to different cities. Each child was a city and found all of their passengers by working together to sort the different color Legos Some cities the children said they were are Los Angles California, Charlotte North Carolina, Miami Florida, Orlando Florida, Barcelona Spain. The children observed Delta model airplanes and helped put together a seating map for a Delta airplane while they were sitting on it.  We ate snack under the Boeing 747 and even looked at a globe while we were there.

We’re all buckled, safe and ready for an exciting day! It’s so fun to ride with our friends!

ARRIVAL!
Patiently waiting for all our friends to arrive and park.

Where are we? KDH Explores Maps

KDH received thank you notes from grandparents after sending Rosh Hashanah cards. Some of these notes included the states the grandparents live in which sparked our curiosity. Where is Kansas? Where is Pennsylvania. We pulled out fabric and paper US maps and took a look. Once we found these states the children wondered where California and North Carolina are. Slowly we located all of the states our grandparents live in. Then the children decided to find Georgia, states where other relatives live, states they visited, states with mountains, and more. Why stop with the US? The children asked about Mexico, Spain, Israel, and other countries, so we pulled out world maps. When we saw a picture of the Earth in a space book, the children asked where we are on the Earth which brought us back to our maps.

Kitah Daled Hay's interest in maps gave us the idea to start our Thanksgiving preparations with marking on a map where our relatives live. The children colored wood push pins and placed them on our U.S and world maps observing the colors and shapes of the countries and states and the letters in their names. Some children placed one push pin in a location and other children placed one push pin for each member of the family that lives in the location.

“six push pins one for each person in my family”
Comparing many maps and globes led to an interesting discussion about what color the world really is. Looking at the globe one child said, “the United States is pink and the Earth is all the colors - yellow, pink.” Another child was looking at the photo of the Earth in the space book and said, “it is green and blue.”

Our maps pop up everywhere. In Playball, we jumped through hoops Coach called islands like the Galapagos so we marked them on our world map. Coach also taught us that the biggest circle in the world is the equator and we marked that. When our map accidentally tore a bit on a crease, children quickly fixed it with a line of push pins and show the line proudly. When we read “Do Unto Otters” we learned “do unto others as you want them to do unto you” was said first in Greece so we marked this country on our map. Recently we received a special package from a class in Portland, Oregon. In addition to marking Portland on our map, we used a piece of yarn to see the distance the package traveled to us in Atlanta.

Exploring the World Around Us

Our ever curious Kitah Gimmel Yeladim are always asking questions about their surroundings, our planet, the moon... the questions just keep coming. We embrace these questions and view them as opportunities to teach and to learn alongside our young explorers.

How wonderful is it that we got to kick off camp with a Topplin' Tots, a mini, soft play world for us to enjoy! Margot, Goldie, Adom, Yael, Mason, Parker and Gavi certainly are enjoying the adventure in the ball pit!

Liav took his time one morning to assemble a map puzzle of America!

Lily is learning how to give instructions to our bug bot so he can navigate around his habitat.

Sela and Mason are looking at the map trying to find islands and the north pole.

Adom knows several of the names of the animals that live around the world! He was able to spot Madagascar because it had a picture of a Lemur! He then proceeded to tell us about Puffins and Pandas! Thanks for the animal info, Adom!

Elliot and Margot are trying to find all of the animals from the list of animals. Margot wants to know where the unicorns live and Elliot is looking for a bike shop, because "Our school lives next to a bike shop," he says.

Parker says we live in Atlanta and wants to know where it is on the map and Erez would like to have a closer look.

Gavi has a construction site and he's building his neighborhood and he knows the name of his street!

Yonah, Mina, and Mason are looking at maps of midtown, the neighborhood of our school and some of our houses!

Look! Lily, Leora, Yonah and Sela are finding their favorite animals all over the world!

Squirrel is building a big house in his neighborhood!

Asher appears to be building onto Piedmont Park, the giant park across the street from IJP! We are so lucky to live in such a great neighborhood!

Orli is reenacting the Parsha in this small world!

Lev is exploring the world of texture, "This feels like music," he exclaims.

Goldie enjoys flying the spacecaft all around the plants and stars!

Ivy's beach play sounded like this, " The girl got shells on the beach with her dad. I never went to the beach with my dad." Hopefully soon, Ivy :)

Sam is spinning around placing dot after dot in our dots exhibit! "This is a fun world!"

Leora is a good big sister and is showing Eliza how to navigate around the waterslide, a new and exciting addition to our water play!

While we've had all of these amazing learning experiences in our classroom and on our playground, we've added another layer to our learning process, The Atelier with Morah Jessica! Here we get to explore our world through various types of materials and textures, as Morah teaching us new techniques and broadens our love for learning and investigation.
