Kitah Alef and their Ladybugs

Springtime announces the arrival of green leaves, blooming flowers and crawling insects. Our class received a shipment of ladybugs! Keeping live insects provides an up-close and hands-on learning experience with nature and science.

The ladybugs are teaching us about their unique life cycle. When they arrived, we noticed that they did not look like the rounded, red and black ladybugs we know and love. They were longer and black and yellow striped. This is the first stage.

Every day at circle time we brought out the ladybug house to observe changes. We also gave them a few drop of water with a pipette. The children are learning about the needs of living things as well as a timeline for their growth.

Soon after arrival, our ladybugs began their metamorphosis by sleeping in little balls, similar to the way butterflies make a chrysalis. When they emerged, they had grown to be red with black spots!

Finally, the ladybugs were ready to be set free! We brought them to the playground and looked for a safe place for them - somewhere they could crawl around with plants to eat and where they would be in danger of getting stepped on. We settled on Morah Ruth's garden, where plenty there is plenty of green growth and protective sides.
Bye, bye, ladybugs!

Kitah Alef's Ladybugs

Ladybugs!
Springtime announces the arrival of new things blossoming all around us. We welcomed the arrival of our visiting ladybugs, who will join our class for a few weeks while we watch them grow. First we greeted our baby ladybugs in the tube they came in, observing their appearances and living space.

Then the children watched as Morah Rena carefully tipped the tube into the ladybugs' new home.

By looking closely we can see them crawling all around. We wondered what ladybugs eat. Do they eat cheerios? Do they like pizza? No! It turns out that they drink water just like we do.

Every day we check on our ladybugs to look for any changes and to give them a few drops of water on their tiny sponge. Caring for creatures fosters empathy and responsibility for living things.

We can't wait until they become the red and black ladybugs we're familiar with! When they reach full adult size we'll bring their house outside and set them free.

Kitah Alef's Ladybugs!

We are so excited to welcome our new ladybug friends to our class. They arrived in a tube along with instructions for proper care.

 We opened the tube...

...shook out the ladybug larva (baby ladybugs) into their house...

...and took turns observing our new specimens.

Every other day Morah Rena squeezes a few drops of water onto their sponge so they'll have plenty to drink.

We'll check on our ladybugs every day to see their progress from larva to pupa (sleeping in their shells) to fully-formed adults! Once they have all transformed we will set them free outside. What a tangible science experience!
