Inspired by the book, Not a Box by Antoinette Portis our class turned a box into cave for the Hashmonaim at Chaukah time. After winter break we turned it into a den for hibernating bears. We like it so much, it serves as a quiet spot for reading in our library.
This was the inspiration for our Special Guy Morning activity yesterday.
And what a fun morning we had!! Come into our classroom and you will find many cardboard box structures: three different cars, two rocket ships, Yerushalayim, new stove and oven, a safe, an airplane and an elephant. These were all created from cardboard boxes with our Special Guys.
Like any special event, the class discussed what to bake to serve our guests. With little deliberation, the children chose chocolate cake. It seems that even though these special guests really like vegetables and salad, cake is still the best food to serve guests. We know that there is always coffee in the library but our class made smoothies too.
Using our new skills drawing with a credit card dipped in paint, the children designed colorful ties to present as a welcoming gift. First they drew the outline of the tie, then painted the inside, and when that dried, they cut out the ties. Many of our guests told us that they planned to wear these incredible pieces of art to work! Rabbi Schusterman was wearing two ties and Shaya and Levi designed ties for themselves to match.
We also used this day to think about how we could help others. Kevin, our maintenance man volunteers at a Homeless Shelter. The children brought in snacks for him to take to the shelter.
Today the children used their new cars, and rocket ships to take imaginary trips. Yinon and Yanai traveled to a place where they speak Spanish. Levi, Shaya and Henia turned a car in an Uber ride. Natalie, Pearl, Anslee and Maddy used the rockets and cars as beds for their dolls. Sammy and Pearl rode in the car together. Becker took the rocket ship to get to where he was going as quickly as possible!
"Oh the places we will go and the things we will do!"
