After winter break, Parshat Shemot, the first parsha in the book of Shemot was to be read in shul on shabbat. Shaya's mom came in and discussed with Shaya, for us, how King Paroh had died and the new king made the Jews slaves. We talked about Baby Moshe (who would later grow up to take the Jews out of Egypt) was put into the Nile river in a basket. Shaya and his mom brought in supplies for all of us to make a Baby Moshe in the basket. We decorated the basket to look similar to the basket that Moshe's mother, Yocheved had made. She prepared it, with tar to keep it from sinking. We know that Moshe's big sister, Miriam watched from the reeds to see what would happen. Princess Batya found Moshe and saved him!
Annika and her mom taught us Parshat V'eirah which tells us how Moshe and Aharon went to Paroh. He did not listen to them so as Annika's mom said, "Bad things happened to the Egyptians" The first seven plagues/Makot: Dam/Blood, Tzefardeiah/Frogs/ Kinim/Lice, Arov/Wild Animals, Dever/horses, cows and cattle dying, Shichin/Boils, Barad/Hail with fire in it. Annika made a demonstration showing us how the water in the nile river all turned to blood.
The children used puppets to act out Paroh, Moshe and Aharon speaking with each other.
We missed two days of school this week due to our snow storm. Thankfully,Yannai's parents rescheduled to do Parshat Bo with Yannai on Friday morning! Yannai's parents set up an experiment with a control to show us how yeast makes dough rise. Why this? When the Jews left Egypt they did not have time to let their dough rise, so it became matzah, that they ate.
While Yannai's Aba narrated, Yannai acted out the part of Moshe, while his Ima was Paroh. The last three makkot, Arbeh/Locusts, Choshech/darkness and Makat Bechorot were inflicted on the Egyptian people. After the last plague, Paroh ran to Moshe and begged him to leave Egypt, together with all the families, their cattle and belongings.
Yannai gave everyione matzah to eat at lunch time, just like we ate when we left Mitzrayim/Egypt.
We look forward to next week to learn about what happened when the Bnei Yisroel/Jewish people left Egypt.
