KG Sensory-Table Talk

This week in our sensory table we had planting dirt, assorted shovels, and golf balls to interact with. The children got all into playing and shoveling with the dirt. We overheard their conversation during center time, and this is how it went.

Adaya-"I'm saying how many girls are by this table"
Laylah- "You can help me plant my seed (holding up a golf ball)"
Ziva- "Can I help you too?"
Adaya- "You can all help!" and she started naming, Laylah, Josie, Ziva, Bryna, and  Kemp.
Adaya- "Kemps not a girl hes a boy."
Kemp- "Why are their big (golf) balls in here?" (they are the seeds)
Josie- " We are pouring it in the bed." (pouring cup of dirt back into the table)
Amitai- "I got a golf ball, I got a plant."
Adaya- "There are a lot of bugs here (pretending the dirt was bugs)."
Laylah- (repeating) Yeah, lots of bugs here."
Josie- We have black dirt."
Ziva- "Look what I found a little seed in the dirt!"
Soon enough some of the dirt spilled on the floor so Bryna and Libi came to the rescue of cleaning up and swept up with our mini brooms.
Bryna- "I'm cleaning this all up."
The children had great interactions with each other  making sure to look out if anyone needs a lending hand. There was a mess to be cleaned up and the children knew just what they had to do.  What we also noticed about this conversation is how many vocabulary words for planting these children already have, and how we can scaffold and add to this in our learning.  The children also spent some more time classifying themselves into boys and girls, counting the numbers and adding them up- this all whilst playing in the dirt.
